The Need

Restoration and Renewal

The capital needs of a building of the size and grandeur of the Cathedral are an ongoing
challenge to its faithful and generous congregation.

In April 2021, the Great Chapter of the Cathedral adopted a Strategic Plan for Cathedral Buildings and Grounds that identifies physical needs and assigns priorities, based on a thorough conditions assessment by experts.

First Priority projects prevent water infiltration into the building, repair damage from leaks, and correct structural and safety deficiencies.

Second Priority projects are not related to safety and maintain the dignity and usability of the Cathedral.

The For All the Saints campaign begins to address some of the most critical First Priority projects identified in the strategic plan by preventing water infiltration through the building’s exterior, the primary cause of interior deterioration.

This is the beginning of a multi-phased fundraising and restoration plan to address the identified needs in phases, through 2025.

The For All the Saints campaign will fund:

MASONRY WORK: $281,000

Masonry work on the north side will prevent water infiltration by replacing missing and broken masonry units, and repointing joints on the exterior walls of the north Nave side aisle, St. Michael’s Chapel, the Lady Chapel, St. Alban’s Chapel, and Cloister. The most urgent masonry work will be done first.

ROOF WORK: $119,000

Water infiltration will be prevented by correcting deficiencies at the roofs of St. Michael’s Chapel, the Lady Chapel, the north Organ Attic, both Nave side aisles, the Baptistery, and the Altar Guild and Priest’s Sacristies.

These two projects address the greatest threats to the building’s structural integrity and the safety of all who use it.

CHALLENGE GOAL

If we reach our challenge goal of $500,000, additional masonry work on the north side of the Cathedral will be completed. Missing and broken masonry units will be replaced and joints on the exterior walls of the north Transept will be repointed. This will reduce the risk of water infiltration through the exterior walls. More exterior masonry repairs will be needed over time, as funding becomes available.

FUTURE WORK

Projects totaling an additional $2.5 million will need to be addressed in later phases, based on the urgency of the work and availability of funding. This includes: additional exterior and interior masonry work, garden and landscaping to provide enhanced accessibility, a new South entrance, installation of security systems, and the restoration of the West Rose window, created by John LaFarge.
