The Need

What We Must Accomplish

Limestone Renewal—Every stone on the church façade will be evaluated and replaced as needed. This will include replacing the iron clamps that secure the individual stones to the unseen brick. Inspection of the carvings has revealed that many of the sculptural elements on the façade will need to be re-carved. These repairs on the main West Forty-sixth Street façade of the church are estimated to cost $2–2.5 million.

Roofs—We seek to address deferred maintenance on all of the various roofs of our church buildings, including new flashing and waterproofing for all dormers, the bell tower, gables, spires, and hip rolls throughout the complex. These repairs are estimated to cost $320,000.

Drainage—Separately, we will repair and upgrade the drainage systems throughout the complex, including gutters, expansion joints, interior and exterior leaders, splash blocks, screens, and scuppers. These repairs are estimated to cost $290,000.

Accessibility and Welcome—We are fortunate that there is room between the Forty-seventh Street door of the church and the front door of the Rectory to install a permanent access ramp without a turn. We believe the proposed design will meet the requirements of the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission. This project is estimated to cost $350,000.

Accessible Restroom—We plan to convert the present women’s restroom to an accessible restroom that can be used by men or women—it’s the only available space on the church level that lends itself to conversion. The estimated cost for this project is $95,000.

New Restrooms for Men and Women—In addition to an accessible restroom on the main floor, we need new and larger restrooms for women and men on the basement level where we are fortunate to have available space and plumbing. The estimated cost for this project is $300,000.

Doors & Windows—All but two of the exterior doors of the church complex have been replaced over the last five years. Many of our interior doors need to be replaced—and we will want to do that in compliance with current standards. There are dozens of ordinary and stained glass windows that need complete restoration. This includes the rose window in the church—from which many small panes are missing. Costs for this project are estimated at $920,000.

Tithe for Outreach and Mission—We wish to express our gratitude to God for the gifts he has given us. We plan to donate ten percent of the amount we raise to Saint Vincent’s Centre for Handicapped Children in Haiti. We invite you to learn about the work of the school by visiting the school’s website. Our gifts will establish an endowment fund to be managed by the Episcopal Church, the income of which will be dedicated to the operating expenses of the school.

They would have us remember the poor, which very thing I was eager to do. —Paul the Apostle, Galatians 2:10.

What We Aspire to Accomplish

Interior Restorations—We worship in the beauty of holiness. The stunning 1997 restoration of the interior of the church invites hundreds of visitors into the nearer presence of God every day of the week. The restoration of our chapels and our baptistry will enlarge this ministry. The cost for the conservation of the chapels and the baptistry is estimated to be $950,000.

Saint Joseph’s Kitchen & Hall—Our parish hall is one of the most used spaces in the church complex. The walls of the hall were repaired and repainted in 2000. It is time to paint and to make very minor repairs to the walls. The parish kitchen, however, needs complete renovation, including new appliances and a number of code-compliant modifications. At present, no food may be prepared in it. The cost for these renovations is estimated at $375,000
